Writing for American Radio Theater

Submit Your Script

A.R.T. is always looking for interesting new work to record and share on our podcasts page. If you're a writer who would like to try your hand at a radio theater script, here are our requirements:

1. Sign a Release Form before you send your script. We must have the release before we can even review your script. You can download the form here.

Once you've filled it out, mail it to:

A.R.T., 3663 Carr Place N., Seattle, WA 98108

2. Your script must be in our preferred format. Download a Word document you can use as a template here. You can also download our preferred font, Courier MM Screenwriter, here. Scripts not in the preferred format will not be considered. Our grumpy typist doesn't want to spend her time reformatting and/or retyping your script.

3. Script must be original and you must be the author. It can be any genre as long as it's a good story. If you are adapting another writer's story to radio, please provide us with proof that the story is in the Public Domain

4. Traditional radio programs were tied to the clock and ran 15, 30, or 60 minutes and we prefer shows that fit those timeframes. We find the 30-minute programs to be the most popular. Generally speaking, a 30-minute script runs 25-35 pages, depending on the density of the dialog.

5. You will not be paid for your script. We are an all-volunteer organization and no one gets paid. Your reward will be hearing a production of your work on the Internets and sharing it with friends, family, and perfect strangers.

Words of Advice

Writing for audio production relies solely on three tools: dialog, sound effects, and music. You must set your scene, introduce your characters, and create your action using only those three tools. Many plays we receive are written with primarily visual cues which don't work for radio. Write for the ear, not for the eye. There are many books about writing for radio still available if you want more in-depth help.
