Dads Army "The Deadly Attachment"

By Bob Perks, director

Dads Army started out more 35 years ago. It evolved into one of the BBC's more repeated series, yet it is still as funny today as it was when it was first broadcast. There is no, smut or nudity, but just wholesome comedy.

It is based in the fictitious sea side town of Walmington-on-Sea on England's south coast, and sort of loosely portrays the 'Local Defence Volunteers' (LDV) who were the stay at home people, the old, retired army/navy and the like. Mainwearing, pronounced 'Mannering' is the local bank manager, Wilson is his chief clerk and Pike the office boy . Jones the butcher, a gnarly veteran of several conflicts. Frazer the undertaker and several more make up the platoon.

Hodges the green grocer, is the chief ARP warden and is Mainwearing's deadliest enemy. Always trying to do something to better or plot the downfall of Mainwearing at every opportunity.

Over all of the series everyone has their favourite or favourites. For me it is "The Deadly Attachment" Why? Well it show's a lot of the characters at their best. Mainwearing at his most pompous, Wilson at his most laid back, Pike at his childish, and so on.

The episode starred Philip Madoc, a big Shakespearian Actor who really lets his hair down and plays a perfect part of the German U-Boat Captain.

It featured one of the top ten of comedy segments (which I won't tell you to spoil it) which has been included in shows such as 'The Two Ronnie's' (Fork Handles) and 'Hancock's Half Hour' (The Blood Donor).
